Baby Love Summer : A Book Companion to Elicit Gestures, First Words, and Word Combinations

As we know language learning doesn’t or shouldn’t stop during the summer.
If anything summer and vacations are a wonderful time to incorporate new vocabulary words!

As the days get warmer and the bees start buzzing, I love to incorporate the book, Baby Loves Summer* into my speech therapy sessions.

Do you know this book?

Baby Loves Summer * by Karen Katz is a delightful book to use with toddlers and young children who are learning to communicate. Lifting the flaps to reveal the answers to simple but stimulating wh-questions is something my children and clients love! The language is simple but perceptive and Katz’ style is colorful and folksy. This is the perfect book to target many different expressive and receptive language goals.  It offers many opportunities to elicit sounds, words, and word combinations. Baby Loves Summer also provides the perfect context to introduce new summer themed vocabulary!

Inspired to use the next book in Katz’ Baby Loves series, I created a book companion for Baby Loves Summer. It has several handouts and activities so you can further expose your child to the vocabulary in this book.  These are interactive, hands-on but SIMPLE activities. They are PERFECT FOR TODDLERS IN EARLY INTERVENTION OR FOR PRESCHOOLERS WHO ARE ATTENDING THE EXTENDED SCHOOL YEAR.

Here’s what’s included:

  • Lists of gestures, single words, and early word combinations to target during reading, repeated readings, and doing the included activities in this packet!

  • Baby Loves Summer Language Learning Handouts

·      Colorful picture cards of some of the vocabulary words included in the book

·      Large puzzle cards that you and your child can put together while saying the words

Say, Color, and Display Coloring sheets

These coloring sheets contain pictures of the target words for your child, student, or client to color. They are unique because the first sound in the pictured word features a mouth forming the first sound in the word. This visual can help your child see how to make the first sound in the word. Coloring these pictures is a wonderful way to intentionally target these words.
